Black fellas and white fellas - we still need that story
by Janice McEwen

"When we heard about the stockmen walking off Wave Hill we were in a drovers' camp in Queensland. We came in for our tucker and Mum had been listening to the ABC news and she told us 'The black fellas have walked off Lord Vestey's station'. We thought they'd end up in jail. But they didn't. We were glued to the ABC for the next nine years".

JULY 2006

A warm welcome to you all.

It's been a while since a newsletter has appeared on the website. The ebb and flow of existence has turned into a tsunami of galactic proportions. We Humanoid Lemmings appear to be unable to discover enough cragged cliffs from which to propel ourselves.

But first let me involve you in the reality I have been interacting with. The mountain country is coming out in gorgeous splashes of yellow where the wattle trees are blooming and the birds are already starting to sound their bonding calls as a prelude to the Spring. The magpies have started to become territorial and the lyrebird is calling more frequently. The satin bowerbirds have been in the orchard every morning and number about 20. The mother wallabies and their joeys have increased this year, but we still only have the one mother grey kangaroo. The foxes have been calling of a night time …….. I have been listening to hear the dingoes down here because they are up at the national park 12 kms away, but so far no luck.

The winter veggie garden has finally taken off. The rabbits have given the new plants a caning because the season has been abnormally dry, so I had to fence off the raised gardens with netting. We have leeks, carrots, turnips, silver beet, spinach, broad beans, broccoli, green peas, cauliflower, cabbage, garlic, parsnips, lettuce, Chinese vegetables, rhubarb, and strawberries.

The district had a few very cold nights three weeks ago the temperature reached -14C and the water in the pipes froze until 11.00 that day. The man that cleans out the sewage and the grease traps came last Sunday and said the reason that people's sewage is not breaking down, as it use to, is the fact that we humans are consuming so many preservatives in the food we eat. [He didn't have to clean ours out, just checked it] ……………Grow your own organic food my friends.

What's been happening outside the boundary fence ???

I have had to curtail the performances because of Ol' Uncle Arthur Rightus. It's not getting any better with age. I did two half day jams with Tex Perkins and James Cruickshank a while ago down in Bungalung country and we recorded the sessions with one mike. The outcome surprised me. There was some great stuff that just came in from the spirit of the rainforest outside James's little abode and lodged itself onto digital eternity in his computer. I think that there are about 12 to 15 musical ideas that could wind up as songs.

I'm going up to the Northern Territory in August to perform at the celebration of the walk off by the Gurindji people 40 years ago. A friend of mine Peter Hudson [an artist] has commenced a series of paintings based on the Walk Off and Wattie Creeek. I helped open his painting exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Gallery a week or two ago. The place was packed. Two of the Gurindji men came down Gus and Maurie. Congratulations Peter.

My friend Paul Kelly is at it again. He suggested a few years ago that he would like to do a project using my songs and getting people who were interested, too sing them. Now it transpires that John O'Donnell of EMI has agreed and with the assistance of Bill Cullen [Paul's manager] the project is off the ground. Wait until you hear who is going to sing what……… I feel so humble and proud as an indigenous person to have these excellent musicians and songwriters doing songs I wrote, [one of which dates back to 1968]. I feel it is a tribute to all the old people who passed on to people like me, knowledge that has shaped my journey through life. I consider that I am just a conduit through which their instruction is expressed……………….. I'm not telling you who the performers are you'll have to wait until further down the track.

Let's look at Terra Australis

Well we can't blame anyone else …. we voted them in, and boy have they radicalized the social fabric of Terra Australis. …….. "I…RRRRR……think they've gone …….. [Tampa] Overboard ………. and become the 'Corporation's Coalition Government' [or the C.C.G]……. They have assumed the role of Terra Australis prison guards who pass, and enforce the laws that are increasing our social, cultural and economic …. Detention.

Not only are they the mouthpieces and enforcers for the Corporations but they have ….. 'embedded' our country in a conflict that has been festering and erupting for hundreds and hundreds of years. [Go ask Richard the Lionheart or Saladin].

The historical irony is that people from the very countries we are now invading and occupying; have lived, worked and contributed to the cultural, social and economic fabric of this country, since Terra Australis was invaded and occupied in 1788. [Go see Bye Khan in the Bourke cemetery, who died aged 107 in the 1940's]

This country has embraced and welcomed; refugees, immigrants, displaced persons and people fleeing conflicts, poverty and persecution……. for decades. They have come with their cultures, ideologies and theologies and managed to build a new life here. Look at the contribution Jewish people have made to this country. Look at the contribution Christian and Non-Christian people have made. Look at the contribution that Muslim people have made. And look at the contribution Indigenous people have made.

This harmony has now been fractured. We now have citizens that are perceived as potential enemies, because their culture, country of origin, or their theology has been identified as a threat to Terra Australis's security.

The situation has descended to the point where our own Terra Austrails citizens, are on opposing sides in the Middle East…… locked in a war in which they are killing each other and each other's families.

I observe this situation with a deep sadness, for the future of Humankind.

The "C.C.G's" decision to "embed" this country in the 'Coalition of the Willing' has produced the opposite outcome to what they state…….. [in their politico-legal- speak-lingo], is…… 'SECURITY"!!!!

Their concept of "Security" has produced, for us here in Terra Australis, an on-going, escalating and dangerous, …… 'INSECURITY'.

I bet old Fred Hollows and Bye Khan are having a laugh and a tongue wag out there in the Bourke cemetery ………….

Time now for a quick look over…….. 'The - Queue - Jumping - Babies - Overboard - Detention - Centre - Pacific - Solution - Terra - Australis - Boundary - fence'. [Once referred to in the 19th century as….. The Yellow - Horde - Yellow - Peril - Fence] …………. Or in the 1960's and 70's ………..[The-Communist - DominoEffect - Stopping - Fence]

There are so many topics on which to focus………….

One of the reasons given to us, for the invasion of Iraq, [besides the need for oil and fact that the Saddam puppet had jettisoned his puppet strings], was the "fact" that all the intelligence "proved" that Pinocchio Hussein, was playing in the chemical lab, and developing Weapons ……. of ……. Mass ……….. Destruction ………… or in military speak….. WMD'S.

Well they bunker-bombed and shelled the entire country ……. Sifted through the rubble and the corpses and pronounced …….. "Mission Accomplished" but it wasn't …… because those WMD's that Pinocchio was supposed to have had in his chemical lab did not exist.

It leaves us with another definition of WMD's …………… Words …… of …….. Mass …… Deception

Then it transpires that our Terra Australis AWB had been illegally paying huge kickbacks to Pinocchio in contravention of U.N. sanctions. Our Terra Australis farmers are the ones who are going to get a massive negative kickback, in the form of emptier wallets

Well I've said enough for this newsletter.

Just a recipe before I sign off.

SPINACH & POTATO TART

Ingredients:
1 kilo of potatoes
500 g of fresh spinach
2 eggs
400 g of low fat cream cheese
1 ½ tablespoons whole-grain mustard
3 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs … parsley, chives, mint etc
Salt and ground black pepper

Line a deep 23cm cake tin with non-stick baking paper.
Peel the spuds put them in a saucepan, cover with cold water, bring to the boil, cook for 10 minutes.
Drain and cool a bit before slicing thinly.
Wash the spinach and put into a pan, cover and cook, stirring once until it has wilted. [don't add water to the pan when cooking]

Drain the spinach thoroughly. Squeeze out excess moisture. Chop the spinach finely
Beat the eggs with the cream cheese and mustard then stir the chopped spinach and fresh herbs in.

Then layer the ingredients in the baking papered tin: first the sliced potatoes. Then the creamed spinach. Keep layering putting in a little salt and pepper between each layer finish with a layer of spuds on top.

Cover the cake tin with a piece of foil and place in a roasting tray.

Fill the roasting tray with enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the cake tin.

Have your oven per heated to 180C

Bake for 50 minutes. Take the foil off about 10 minutes before you take it out to brown up the layer of spuds on top.

Hope you enjoy the spinach and spuds

Until the next newsletter I hope you stay safe, happy, and well.

Kind Regards

Kev
