They laboured hard in the eucalypt scrubs, tilled the soil as best

    Verse 2

This is the story of one such man, and his years of earning daily

With nothing to be shown ‘cept his worn backbone, an calloused
hands that held a worried head

Bob Shaw rode in with his heaps of hope, but his life was just a

It broke his spirit and it took his youth and finally it ground him down

    Verse 3

“Bob the droughts returned and its gripped your ground, the banker cut

     your credit last week

You can’t muster the strength now to wield your axe, livin’ on damper,

Bob I see your woman got another child, man the season here don’t look good

Your top soil been blowin’ through your barbed-wired fence and there’s

bareground where your hay once stood”

    Verse 4

The prices are down per pound all round there aint no work on the

     shearin’ runs

The drovin’s cut out, there ain’t no grass about, and no one wants their

    horse breakin’ done

With your kids eatin’ potato soup, black tea and a treacle bread

If you don’t earn a quid for them kids quite soon you’ll come home and

    find there’s someone dead

    Verse 5

An your horses too weak to haul your loads, he’s as skinny as a garden
     rake

His rib bones stand out in them neat curved rows, he wouldn’t make it out
     to your front gate

What will you do Bob when the winter comes, you’ve worn through to
    the bottom of the stack

Your stocks unfed they like the walkin’ dead I wouldn’t blame ya if your
    ports’ is packed

    Verse 6

They packed it all up in a high spring cart, never said a word farewell

His defeated pride kept gnawin’ his insides, and his pace reflected his toil
    well
